Campaign for Pollution-Free Ganga Gains Momentum Across Howrah District

Uluberia, October 2:

As part of the “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign under the State Mission for Clean Ganga, West Bengal, a series of cleanliness and pollution awareness programmes were organized across Ganga Border Gram Panchayat at Kalingar, Dhulasimla, and Heerapur under Uluberia-I Development Block. The initiative, which ran from 17th September to 2nd October 2025, aimed to promote community participation in keeping the Ganga pollution-free and to strengthen awareness about the importance of a clean and sustainable environment.

The programme was organized by Uluberia-I Block and supported by the District Ganga Committee, Howrah, as part of the ongoing state-wide effort to ensure public involvement in the Namami Gange mission. Volunteers, Self-Help Group members, Panchayat representatives, and local residents actively participated in cleaning drives along the riverbanks and adjoining areas.

Speaking on the occasion, BDO H. M. Riajul Hoque emphasized,

> “The Ganga is not only a river but our lifeline and heritage. Keeping it clean is our collective responsibility. Through Swachhata Hi Seva, we aim to create mass awareness against all forms of pollution and inspire every citizen to contribute towards a cleaner, healthier future.”

He further added that the initiative aligns with the vision of the State Mission for Clean Ganga, Howrah, which is focused on pollution abatement, waste management, and riverfront development through community-driven efforts.

Officials from the District Ganga Committee, Howrah, highlighted the importance of such local-level interventions, noting that sustained awareness and participation are vital to achieving long-term ecological balance.

> “Community engagement is the foundation of the Clean Ganga movement. Every small act of cleanliness counts when it comes to protecting our sacred river,” a committee member remarked.

The campaign concluded with a pledge ceremony, where participants vowed to keep their surroundings clean and avoid dumping waste into water bodies. The day served as a reminder that environmental protection begins at the grassroots—and that each citizen has a role in preserving the purity of the Ganga for generations to come.
