The 79th Indian Independence Day was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm today at the Asha Bhavan Centre, Uluberia. The programme began with the unfurling of the National Flag by the Block Development Officer of Uluberia-I Block, Shri H. M. Riajul Hoque, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Dignitaries present included Shri John Mary Barui, Director of Asha Bhavan Centre; Arunima Jasu, Principal; the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), Howrah; and the Project Officer, NIC Howrah. Students of Asha Bhavan presented impressive cultural performances on the theme of national independence.

In his address, BDO Shri H. M. Riajul Hoque said, “It is always a pleasure to visit Asha Bhavan Centre. Watching the performances of the students here is truly heart-warming — they may be ‘Divyang’ (persons with disabilities), yet their level of performance is outstanding.”

Established in 1999, Asha Bhavan Centre has been working across India to promote rehabilitation services, create opportunities, and protect the rights of children, women, and persons with disabilities (Divyangjan). Thousands of people have benefitted and been rehabilitated through the organisation, whose operational headquarters is located at Kathila campus, Uluberia, Howrah.

The organisation receives support from the Government, International NGOs, Corporate CSR grants, local associations, donors, patrons, friends, and well-wishers. It was founded on the dream of Sukeshi Barui, brought to life by a dedicated team of social workers, and is spearheaded by Padma Bhushan awardee Dominique Lapierre, Mrs. Lapierre, and Brother Dayanand.

Asha Bhavan Centre stands as a landmark organisation, working with the marginalised community to uphold dignity, equity, and self-confidence in society. Its mission is to create meaningful opportunities for the social and economic development of marginalised people so that they can live with dignity, equality, and self-confidence.
